Temporary Labour FAQs
Although gaining popularity in the construction industry, temporary labour is a concept that many have questions about. It’s important to ask these questions so you can ensure that temporary labour is the best decision for you as a client or an employee. Today we’ll go over some of our most frequently asked questions. Many of these questions are similar for both clients and employees, so we will explore most of the questions from both perspectives.
How Does Temporary Labour Work?
For Clients
Clients seek out temporary labour or seasonal work through a staffing agency to help reduce costs to their company and maintain a high volume of work. After meeting with an agency to explore the needs and expectations of the client, the staffing agency matches the best employees for the client. The staffing agency then sends the employees to the client’s worksite to aid them with their goals while fulfilling the role of Human Resources for the temporary staff. For Employees
Employees of a staffing agency go through an application and interview process to determine where their skills fit best. After completing the process, an employee waits to be contacted by the agency for an opening. Once an opening is available, the agency ensures that all the required certifications and training are complete, and the employee is then able to begin work. Although you are working for the client, you are employed and paid by the agency. How Much Does Temporary Labour Cost?
For Clients
It’s important to remember that not all agencies charge the same. The rates will vary due to factors such as tasks and skill sets being utilized by the temporary worker and the number of workers required. However, the cost will include advertising, recruiting, wages, holiday pay, all payroll taxes (CPP, EI), income tax deductions and remissions, and WCB premiums.
For Employees
An employee’s wage depends on the minimum wage of the region they hope to work in as well as the skill set they carry when they come to the agency. All staffing agencies ensure that their employees are getting a fair wage for their valued skills.
What are the Benefits of Temporary Labour?
For Clients
We like to focus on three benefits for clients when they use a temporary staffing agency: minimize cost, greater flexibility, and diversity in experience. Want to look at each point more in depth? See a better breakdown in The Top 3 Benefits of Using a Temporary Staffing Agency.
For Employees
By working in temporary labour, employees have the benefit of changing their environment. Changing workplaces means employees are exposed to different fields, can utilize different skills, and can take advantage of training that could reward them with new certificates. By experiencing different fields of construction and learning new skills, employees may feel directed towards a new career path. The exposure to different industries and meeting people in new companies allows employees to network and create connections which can channel them into a new career.
